Today! I look like a nutty bug, haha, but I embrace it.

SUCH a good day. Getting lots of errands sorted with Amanda in town. She’s like my personal lord and saviour, haha! Bought a gold-plated chain so I can wear this super cute mini gold heart pendant I got as a baptising gift in like 1986, haha, and a new bracelet-thing for the watch-head I have, and all those sorts of things.

But we spent the afternoon in the BEST park ever. The best grass I’ve ever sat on. Cool, long, fluffy, comfy. SO good. Then one of my best friends came there, then one of Amanda’s friends too, and we all lounged in the grass and chatted. So good!

Now football! More football! Always more football! Brazil - Chile!

I feel like technically, I should not be allowed more perfect days now. So so hot and beautiful here right now! :)

The weather is so weird and all I can think about is that heatwave two years ago when I was just ENJOYING THE SUMMER SO MUCH.

While we’re on the topic of eye shadows, can I just say that Bobbi Brown’s powder shadows are just not good?

WIth most fancy brands, if you find one product you want to suddenly buy the whole shebang. I get so into the idea that this brand (and yes, it’s kind of aspirational! I want to be that girl who has a little chic make-up bag with fab products) that I want everything to work.

So I can say this: Bobbi Brown is amazing for lipsticks (fabulous for “my lips but better” shades) and the famous gel eyeliners. I don’t go a day if I can help it without using the gel eyeliners, and a small pot despite a cat eye addiction has been with me for a year now without running out (!).

But the powder shadow has the worst staying power, and despite putting down a base in the shape of concealer first on my eyelid, one or two hours later, my eyelid looks oily (sexy description) with product that has slid off/away into little lines, and absolutely crazy-looking eye make-up.

Considering I forked up - Jesus take the wheel - £15 for this, it has worse staying power than the cheap high street things I have. Pigment, sure, but what use is it if it’s disappeared into thin air (or worse, in lines on your eyelid) an hour later?

I can also on good authority (my own) report that their concealer kit is crap. Three parts and goes into pigmented dots under the eye after an hour or two as well.

Do you get lured in by brands too? Do you ever buy make-up in an aspirational way, thinking it will change who you are in a good way?

I find that right before bed, when you are about to take your make-up off anyway, is the best time to experiment with make-up. I always think I’ll ‘try something new’ in the morning while I get ready but this most often results in a) confusion so it gets vague/weak and doesn’t look nice or b) weirdness and having to start all over again.

Palettes are the best thing to experiment with though. Both of these (Sephora and No 7 respectively) have hidden compartments with blushes and countouring powders too. Pretty fun!

I’m great at staying within what I know (champagney shimmery shadow + liquid liner + lipstick, for example) but not so good at trying new techniques or eyeshadow colours. Often I just think everything brings out my dark circles (biggest beauty hang-up - if no one stops me I’ll put on concealer until the cows come home) so I tend to not experiment much with colour.

How good are you guys at trying new things in your makeup routines? Does your makeup bags contain the same ol’ tried and tested classics or do you have new things to try?

My husband and I are currently rewatching the Buffy the Vampire Slayer box set and I can’t help but get inspired from Buffy (aka SMG) - glowy skin, great shiny hair, slightly heavier lined eyes and natural lips. Such a great look! Clearly it’s something SMG brought with her from the show into her private look. I’d daresay this is her signature look, and it’s a great one to boot!

Today, I decided to try the Beauty Department’s home-made lip scrub - 1 tsp honey, 1 tsp brown sugar - and it was great! I let it sit on there for a few minutes before scrubbing with my finger and then rinsing it all off and putting on a clear lip balm. Yay! And then I became a dork and had fun with lipstick! I think it’s kind of neat to do neutral make-up and neutral clothes and hair, and then try all the lipsticks to see them side by side.

I’ll admit though, the pretty much neon matte Lady Danger, a red from MAC, is not my friend. It is just so drying due to its matte formula. It also means that it wears off in a really unflattering way compared to my other lipsticks! I always wear a lip balm with SPF15 underneath my lippies, and even then I feel like I’ve been walking in the Sahara.
